Plugin original hard drive?

So I was looking at my moms old PC and wondered if I could get it to run Windows Vista, using our current PC's RAM. then that computer wouldnt turn on. So I thought maybe I could use the older PC's HDD as a secondary drive. That works but the current one doesn't! Why? Compaq Presario
