Should I spend 4th of July with my BF?

today he called me and asked what we were doing for july 4...said he had a friend invite him over to stay the weekend. my bf said he felt bad id be with my mom and wouldnt go to his friends. i told him to go b/c i dont want him feeling sorry for me. if he wanted to spend it with me he should have said that instead. what do you think?
